Horses with Horns

Friday, May 8th, 2009

The girls and I were checking out some art the other day at Art House. Here is my favorite piece of the high school exhibit. I wish I’d noted the artists name.

We were getting ready to leave when we stumbled into the back room where we learned a band was going to be playing in a short matter of time. The band was called Horses with Horns. Chamila LOVED this group and I think it was because the singer was a young girl just a couple years older than she was and their songs were about unicorns, playing, and other things little girls are into. To be honest I loved them too. I guess that makes me a little girl.

Brother and sister.

Chamila, Giselle, and I have been working on songs and I think this show really inspired Chamila. Maybe we’ll play shows with Horses with Horns some day.

Ariel Erestingcol’s Cewebrities Show

CEWEBRITIES

My buddy Ariel Erestingcol just had an art show in Los Angeles. Ariel is a unique dude with tons of creativity and awesome theories about art and beyond. I wish I could have made it out to his opening but I could not. So, really, I can’t write about his show. However, the great Arlo Eisenberg, creator of streetwear line GOST , gives a great little review right over here.

And for his subject matter he chose people (and animals) who have achieved some measure of fame, dubious or otherwise, through the internet.  Hence the name of the show, “CeWEBrities.”

Congratulations Ariel. The work looks great! The show runs through May 30th at the Sabina Lee Gallery.

Artist Jeremy Burks

Monday, April 27th, 2009

My good friend Jeremy recently participated in a group show over the easter weekend. The show was titled Biblical Proportions and was split up into two nights. Friday night (the night Jeremy’s opening was) was the old testament show and Saturday was the new testament opening.

The artists were to take any part of the bible, within their chosen testament, and transform it into a piece of art. Jeremy chose the Death of Sisera which resides in the book of Judges.

Pretty eerie stuff.

Jeremy just got his site up and you can follow along here: www.jeremyburksart.com. I’m excited to see what else he comes up with.

anniversary2

New Image Art Gallery is turning 15 and to celebrate they’re having the best art show on earth. If you’re in the L.A. area this saturday and want to see magic on walls you need to go to this!! Our friend Matthew Rodriguez got invited to be in this show at the last minute. I stopped by the night before he flew out to L.A. Here are some pictures of some of his work.

This is an art critic that was going to try to go check out the show on Saturday. Everytime I see this puppet he is far from sober. He told me he lost his legs in Nam.

Art Shows Tonight in Austin

Saturday, December 6th, 2008

Have we mentioned our good friend Matthew Briar Bonifacio Rodriguez before? He’s an artist. He is in a traveling group show that is opening in Austin tonight at Super Alright Creative Studio. The show is called Way Down In New Orleans, and is curated by Aubrey Edwards. The show starts at 7pm, click here for more details.

This travelling exhibition opened in the nation’s capital of Washington DC on the third anniversary of Katrina, and it has now come to the capital city of Texas.Way Down in New Orleans unites an array of New Orleans-based artists with artists nationwide, five artists hailing from Austin…

Also…

Since you will already be in East Austin be sure to swing by the East End Craft Gallery art opening tonight featuring the collections of Melanie Sallis & Susan Page. The show starts at 6pm. We recently stocked the gallery with a number of tees and accessories so check them out!

GIVE LESS FRUITCAKE, BUY MORE ART (art show)

Wednesday, December 3rd, 2008

I was pleased to find out that two of the most creative people I’ve ever been able to know and work with are in an art show this friday at T and P Fine Art Gallery in Philadelphia. I guess it’s a big deal because these two guys were such a big part of the genius behind Paul frank Industries for about 16 years combined. Working at a place like PF for that long could burn some out – you work all day creating all kinds of special amazing-ness and at the end of the day you sign somebody else’s name on your work – but not these two. They have both moved on to bigger and better things, like this art show, and also:

  • Benjamin Soto is now art directing a top secret Disney project that I cannot talk about (mostly because I don’t know what the project is).

Californians, go see Matthew Rodriguez at Tinlark Gallery NOV.15th 5-8PM!!!

Friday, November 14th, 2008

Who is Matthew Rodriguez?

He was very friendly early on in our transition from California to Austin. Matthew has quickly become one of my favorite artists and favorite people altogether. He makes awesome artwork and is arguably one of the biggest artists coming out of Texas. All of you people living on the west coast should stop by and say hello and take your friends and take him a tall boy of sparks and ask him about Africahhhh. He’s basically my brother from another mother.

Where is Tinlark Gallery?

Juxtapoz wrote about the show here.

“The arts show is going to be a collection of paintings and mixed media telling stories about hoodlum street animals, fed up plants, stray animals, tiny chandeliers, the great pacific trash pile, the environment’s big problem, bling, and stories told by my grandpa,” Rodriguez told us.

The Raconteurs

Monday, October 13th, 2008

They are AMAZING. I’ve always dug their sound but man, seeing them live two weeks ago at ACL was a whole new thing. The energy and musicianship, all sooo good. Here is a shot I was able to take just as they had finished their set.

Also, after their performance, I was able to meet the man himself. No, not Jack White, but the designer of a ton of the gig posters for Jack’s bands, Rob Jones. He is a swell fella with an immense amount of knowledge, creativity, and kindness. I may have a fun project in the works thanks to Rob. I’ll fill you all in on it as it develops. Good night.
