I made a new little painting for tonight’s love/haiti event at Mosaic. Here’s what that looks like.

There will be a lot of neat items from local businesses and artists in the silent auction including: The Decoder Ring Design Concern, Johnson’s Backyard Garden, The Good Shoppe and artists including but not limited to: Penny Van Horn, David Clark, and Corinne Loperfido. For a more complete list of contributors click here. All proceeds benefit world vision’s relief work in Haiti.

Happy new year everybody! There is some new stuff going on around here lately. First off, you may have noticed, we updated the theme here on our blog. It really is nothing fancy. It’s actually the default wordpress theme, called Kubrick, with a fun header I designed featuring our new logo, but I like it. Less is more, right? I’m also, excited that comments should now be working again. The last theme disabled comments for some reason and I was just never nerdy enough to figure out why. Somebody please comment on here so I know comments are working again.
Also new this year is our new store hosted by BigCartel. We’ll be updating our ol’ Etsy store with the same items for those of you that like to hang out over there. I’ll be posting different things in the stores real soon aside from tees, like drawings, zines, etc… eh, hopefully.
What I’m most excited about for this new year is my new art studio. It’s run by the fine folks at Okay Mountain. It’s right around the corner from home. I plan on being there daily, though this first week back from the long, laaaazy break was a little more demanding than I had hoped, stifling my chances to be studio bound daily. I did make it down there one evening to organize some materials, coat some panels, and draw these dudes.

sharpie and spray paint on yellow pages.

So far we’re off to a great start to a new year over here at casa Muñoz. Here’s a new year and lots of drawing, making, and loving.
Cheers.

I will be showing some art in 2 venues this weekend. Tonight from 6 to 10pm is the opening of Mexic-Arte Museum’s Mix N Mash show which I made a super new and fun piece for. Tickets are $25 and my buddies James Huizar, Randy Muniz, and Tony Diaz will also have pieces in this show. Nothing but 12×12 inch panels here. For a full list of the artists and all the details click here.
Here is the piece I made for the Mix N Mash show. Click here to view the process shots.

Tomorrow the Maranda Pleasant Gallery will be holding their annual 12×12 box show with every piece priced at $100 . Some of the proceeds will go to Explore Austin. There is no cover for this exhibit and you can even go before the madness from 10am to 6pm to do some early purchasing. The party is from 6pm to 10pm. A few friends will be showing work here as well including: Jeremy Burks, Will Bryant, and Zach McDonald. Apparently 25 pieces have already sold! So go, go, GOOOO!

Stay warm this weekend err’body.

Have you heard of HOPE? They’re awesome. They help other people EVERYWHERE! We (mostly Giselle because she’s AWESOME) have been tabling the new HOPE farmers market here in East Austin recently. It’s pretty awesome. Andi, who runs HOPE, asked me to be the very first artist to make a poster for their poster series. I agreed and started sketching ideas right away.

I liked a few of the ideas but I LOVED good ol’ Mon holding a flower, so I chose to develop that one further. This is the drawing I did on vellum.

I scanned that in and colored it up and the rest is my story.

Come by the farmers market this sunday from 11am to 3pm to say hello and maybe get a poster.

Tomorrow is Halloween. This is very exciting news. It’s especially exciting news to my 3.5 year old daughter who is dressing up as Starlite, the magical flying horse, from the Rainbow Brite books she loves so much. She’s been talking for months about dressing up as Starlite and tomorrow her wish comes true.

Almost immediately after she decided she would dress up as Starlite she started telling Giselle that she could dress up as Lala Orange and that I should be Buddy Blue. These are 2 of the other characters in the Rainbow Brite books that she loves so much. They are part of the Colored Kids gang. Sounds pretty controversial, right? It’s pretty innocent, I think. Here is what the Colored Kids look like, with Lala and Buddy circled.

Last year for halloween I looked like I was ready to hit up the gay clubs and this year shouldn’t be any different. Giselle will probably look very beautiful, as usual.

She’s going to love me for posting that.
Oh one last thing, tomorrow night at Domy Books I will be showing a couple drawings for their annual Monster Show. Daily Juice will be there providing delicious potent punches. Mmmmmm. You should make it a point to stop by to see all the spooky monsters that will be on the walls. Here is what my drawings will look like tomorrow night, though they should have less-to-no grass behind them.

My buddy Randy Muñiz, who I’ve written about before, asked me if I wanted to make a skull for a mural project that he, and his friend James, are putting together at the Mexic-arte museum. I said, “sure” and then I drew this.

I was pleased with this drawing and proceeded to Ink it up and make it clean, but it was losing all it’s magic. I’ve mentioned before that I am a fan of pencil sketches over the finished black lined drawings. There is something so honest about pencil drawings. So, what I did was just blow up my sketch to 3 feet and painted right over the black and white copy. Here is what that looks like.

Here is a picture of my daughter standing next to Bigote Brown.

Bigote Brown will be wheatpasted on the side of the museum next to the skulls of 6 other artists. Come out to the Viva La Vida Fest, celebrating dia de los muertos, tomorrow in Downtown Austin to check it all out.

I was invited to be a part of The Sex and Death show over at the The Fifth Gallery in downtown Austin. The opening was last night but the work will be up until November 13th when there will be a closing reception.
My favorite piece in the show was by none other than my good buddy, Jeremy Burks. He is what they call “mad talented.”

Here is the drawing I did for the show.

you can view more photos from the opening night and other fabulous art submissions here. Big thank you to John Gomi and the rest of The Fifth Gallery.

My buddy Maseman was kind enough to include me into a group show that he and the rest of The Screamer Company are putting together. The show is titled Conversation Piece and will take place on Friday, September 25th from 6-10 pm at The United States Art Authority . Here is the official poster.

I saw some of the other pieces that will be in the show today when I dropped off my pieces and, boy, are they good!
It was so much fun getting some pieces together for this show. Here are some sneak peeks of the work I did.

I hope to see you on the 25th!
