Olin and the Moon Poster

Wednesday, August 27th, 2008

I recently got to create a gig poster for a band called Olin and the moon. They have a residency at Tangier In Los Angeles every Wednesday in September. These guys were super cool to work with and they have a great sound. I wanted to share some of the steps involved in creating their poster.

First I created some thumbnail comps. These are usually small, quick, and messy. A form of brainstorming for the right idea. I felt like I quickly had what I needed. If you look closely you can see some of Chamila’s scribblings.

I then re-drew it a little cleaner with pencil and blew it up. Though cleaner, it was still pretty rough. Pencil usually means texture and/or rough. This gave me a good image to work from for the final drawing.

I then created the layout using this rough pencil drawing and sent this to the band to show them where I was going with this. They were pleased.

I wanted to make sure they liked where this was going before I redrew this dude using ink since that is more time consuming, hence the rough mock-up. Here is the ink drawing.

I then placed this into the original layout and tweaked the colors a bit. Here is the final poster. Hope you enjoyed this. Feel free to leave questions or comments in the field provided just below.
